Technologies to Support Aging among People with Long-Term Disabilities

The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Technologies to Support Aging among People with Long-Term Disabilities (RERC TechSAge) is a collaborative grant center based at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Georgia Institute of Technology, Person In Design, and Georgia State University. Founded in 2013, TechSAge features multidisciplinary research, development, and training projects that are dedicated to understanding the needs of, and developing supportive technologies for, people aging with long-term vision, hearing, and mobility disabilities.

ISG 2026 World Conference Highlights

TechSAge had a big presence at the International Society for Gerontechnology 15th World Conference in Vancouver, Canada this March. Jon Sanford delivered a keynote address and several team members gave presentations on topics including digital literacy, technology solutions to support caregivers, and robotics.

Featured Article: Development and Usability of MSafe: A Fall Risk Application for Older Adults with Multiple Sclerosis

Falls are common among older adults with multiple sclerosis (MS) and can lead to injuries and loss of independence. A new TechSAge article in Sensors highlights the development of MSafe – a smartphone app that enables individuals with MS to assess and monitor their own fall risk. The app asks simple questions (e.g., fall history, medications) and includes short balance, movement, and thinking tasks. Older adults who tested MSafe said it was easy to use and helped them better understand their own abilities and fall risk. Staff Spotlight: Eliza Baby

Eliza Baby is a speech-language pathologist and PhD candidate at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She is a graduate research assistant in the Human Factors and Aging Laboratory. On TechSAge, she supports the R1. User Needs Study, focusing on the cognitive and communication needs of older adults. Her research interests include cognitive aging, communication disorders, and technology-supported care. Before her PhD, she founded women-led speech-language pathology clinics in India. Fun fact: She enjoys creative writing and salsa!
