Accessible Gaming Tools

This project focused making digital games more accessible for people with sensory and mobility limitations. We developed a series of simulation tools for designers to experience what a game looks and feels like with certain impairments and learn about ways to optimize their interface design.

ALIGN

Application for Locational Intelligence and Geospatial Navigation

ALIGN is a mobile device app is designed to support pedestrian wayfinding for people with disabilities. Combining real-time, dynamic data (e.g., traffic, weather) and information on key accessibility features, such as curb cuts and crosswalks, ALIGN provides users with customized routes intelligently tailored to their preferences and support needs.

Connected Home Technologies

Connected home technologies hold promise for supporting independence among individuals aging with mobility disabilities, yet their complex setup can be a barrier. Our research highlights how telepresence tools can simplify remote troubleshooting, with features like multi-view cameras and annotations, while suggesting improvements to enhance platform accessibility.

Gait Speed Measurement

Walking speed (or gait speed) is an important measure of functional ability and is predictive of a variety of health outcomes for older adults. However, measuring gait speed has not been adopted broadly in routine clinical practice. We developed a series of tools to measure gait over a short distance, including a wall-mount system and a portable smart phone app

Mobile Manipulator Robot

We developed an interactive robotic system to provide physical assistance to people with severe motor impairments. The system features a manipulator robot, equipped with wheels for driving and two arms with grippers that allow for grasping objects and interacting with people, and a robotic hospital bed.

MS Assistant

MS Assistant is a health and wellness self-management app that assists individuals aging with MS. The app is designed to be an educational platform, providing the latest research, health tips, and MS-related information. Moreover, the app provides valuable social support by enabling users to interact with other people with MS throughout the world.

Steady Wheels

Seated postural control, or the ability to maintain stability with one’s center of mass while seated, is essential for wheelchair users to safely perform activities of daily living. We developed Steady Wheels – a custom-designed, fall risk mobile health application for adults with mobility disabilities who used wheelchairs.

Voice-Activated Digital Assistants: Development and Instructional Support

We developed and tested a series of voice-activated skills for Amazon Alexa, designed to support people aging with mobility disabilities at home. These skills integrated Alexa’s voice command capabilities with a variety of smart home technologies, from to smart lightbulbs to smart plugs.
