Research Projects

Research projects include detailed user needs assessments and creative technology-based interventions aimed at guiding technology innovation and design for people aging with disability.

R1

R1. User Needs Assessment for People Aging with Long-Term Disabilities

Building upon previous research, we are continuing efforts to understand user needs for everyday activities in-depth among older adults with long-term vision, hearing, and mobility disabilities. We are expanding participatory research studies, including interviews and surveys, to identify critical technology needs among a larger and more diverse sample of people.

R2. Scale-Up Evaluation of an Evidence-Based Telewellness Program

The TechSAge Tele Tai Chi program uses videoconferencing to deliver an evidence-based tai chi exercise program in a way that is both socially-engaging and accessible to people aging with mobility disabilities. In this next phase of our research, we are deploying and evaluating the program in community-based settings (e.g., senior centers, senior living communities).

R3. Design Requirements for Self-care Technologies

We are investigating the barriers and facilitators to self-care activities, like bathing and grooming, among people aging with mobility disabilities. Findings will guide the design and development of innovative self-care technologies, including the TechSAge soft robotic shower head.
